Archive Port Jeff CollectionThis month The Archive is proud to present a rich and varied collection of vintage post cards that picture Port Jefferson, New York, and provide a nostalgic and enlightening look at a beautiful Long Island village. The collection is generously stocked with 435 images from picture post cards including priceless views of bygone Port Jefferson and its many attractions - the harbor, inns, restaurants, the firehouse, beaches, ferries, streets, the railroad station, a public hall, the bank, churches, the post office, private residences, special occasions, the library, hospitals, and schools.
The collection also features scenes of what are now Belle Terre and Poquott, two incorporated villages bordering Port Jefferson Harbor, and images of what became Port Jefferson Station. These rare views of the communities, often identified as Port Jefferson on early post cards, show people swimming at Pine Bluff Camp, parading during Old Home Week, boating off Marshall’s Pier, arriving at the Evergreen Hotel, enjoying a Maypole party, and driving along Cliff Road. The collection is well documented with all the captions contained on the original post cards.
